When WebSpeech (a new voice recognition API) was added to Google Chrome, we wanted to introduce it to the world in a playful and useful way. That's why we made Spell Up: a game that helps people improve their English by speaking to their web browser.
The site received more than 4 million visits, with more than 56% of users coming from countries where English is not a native language. It was picked up by both educational and tech press, with social media posts showing it being used from people's living rooms, to classrooms all over the world.
